Dominant Dany Heatley
Before entering the NHL, Dany Heatley followed in his fathers footsteps (professional hockey player, Murray Heatley) and played hockey at the University of Wisconsin. For Heatley, gaining an education was important and he spent two successful yearsboth on and off the icein college. He was the first draft pick of the Atlanta Thrashers and the second overall pick of the 2000 NHL entry draft, though completed his second year in Wisconsin before debuting with the Thrashers in the 2001-02 season where he won the Calder Memorial Trophy for Rookie of the Year. In his second NHL season he scored more than a point a game and finished the year with 89 points in just 77 games. In his third year he again dominated the ice and was invited to play in the All Star Game where he was the youngest player to earn a hat trick while tying the scoring record with four goals. During this time, Heatley continued to represent Canada at international play earning gold at the 03 and 04 World Championships and silver in 05. Heatleys play was consistent and he continued to perform at a level with the leagues most elitethen tragedy struck the life and career of the promising 22 year old NHL star. Dany, traveling at a high rate of speed in his Ferrari with teammate Dan Snyder, lost control of the car resulting in a wreck that cost Snyder his life. Heatley was injured, but it was the loss of his friend that consumed him. He was emotionally devastated and in 2005 asked to be traded from Atlanta and move from the constant reminders of that terrible accident. Heatley began the 2005-06 season with the Ottawa Senators and quickly became a fan favourite while leading the team in scoring. Heatley now calls Ottawa home and in the fall of 2007 signed a 6 year contract extension for $45 million. Dany is an inspiring player and thrills fans of the game each time he steps on the ice. He is equally as impressive off the ice as a role model to aspiring young athletes. His words are important, candid, and inspirational. He has learned many lessons and in Dominant Dany Heatley, he shares these with his many fans.
A Season of Loss, a Lifetime of Forgiveness: The Dan Snyder and Dany Heatley Story
This narrative about two boys from different backgrounds touches on family, forgiveness, sport, and making peace with tragedy. Dan Snyder was not a sure thing in professional hockey, but defied expectations—playing for both the minor league's Chicago Wolves and the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers. Dany Heatley, on the other hand, had been tapped for success from the start as a college star and high draft pick. The two made an unlikely pair, but became friends. In September of 2003, the then 22-year-old Heatley lost control of his speeding Ferrari; Snyder was thrown from the vehicle and died six days later. The loss of their teammate, friend, and son sent those who knew Snyder looking for healing or revenge. As the legal story unfolds, so too does a story of forgiveness, rooted in the Canadian Mennonite tradition from which Snyder hailed. Snyder's family, taking an approach to their loss dictated by their faith, chose to make peace with both Heatley and his parents. This story of forgiveness reveals a lesson in loss, hope, and peace in the face of tragedy.
