It is strange.  The only photo I recall of them together is the Twiiter pic Ovechkin posted two months ago.  The only sighting of them together was at a DC club a month and a half ago.  Since then nothing.  It's also very odd neither has said anything about her birthday.  Who knows what's going on with them now.

Maybe she would be stupid enough to go across all those time zones to spend a few days with him in Miami.  She had to retire from her singles and doubles matches due to injury.  She seems serious about her pro tennis career and wants to improve her ranking and results.  Logic says she should rehab her left knee and prepare for her next tournament in Thailand.  Let's see if she is smart and not stupid, if she puts her career first or is more into her personal life.

I don't know their status for sure either.  Ovechkin has a charity event in Montreal the day before the February 4 game against the Canadiens.  I wouldn't be surprised if he goes on the road trip with the Caps for the TB Lightning and FL Panthers games.  He would be with the team to give moral support, plus get in some skating on his own and perhaps even a practice or two before the MTL game.  Going without skating for two weeks could make him less effective in terms of conditioning and timing, and I assume he wouldn't want to to take that risk.  A few days vacation seems reasonable, but to go to Australia for a short time with  time zone differences and jet lag doesn't make sense since the fatigue could also negatively affect  his effectiveness for the MTL game.

I don't have the link saved, but I read an interview article a few years ago about how protective Ovechkin's mom is, how she warns him to be very careful about ppl who could be interested in him only for his money.  I also recall something about how his mom never liked any of his girlfriends except for one years ago before he became rich and famous.

All of the above.  Ovechkin's mom influences all his decisions, and his gf choices one of the most important.  That's why he goes through women quickly one after the other.  Either mom intervenes and declares his choice is unacceptable, or the gf splits because she can't compete with mom for influence and attention.  It's no coincidence that he started to score goals like he used to when his tennis gf left DC.

Well, whatever is eating Ovechkin's karma and mojo needs to stop now that Crosby is out again.  Ovechkin has a lot of expectations he is supposed to live up to, especially being captain of the team.  The way people are chirping and discussing Crosby make it seem like like the NHL can't function without him? Like Crosby is the only face of the NHL and if he isn't playing why bother. There's awesome players out there who are overshadowed by Crosby, including Ovechkin. If anything with Crosby out for now it is their time to come forward and shine, and this is when Ovechkin really has no excuses.  He has a new coach.  A new year is upon him.  If Ovechkin has issues with Crosby this and Crosby that, now is the time to step up and shine the spotlight on  his abilities that were so amazing from 2005-2009.   Then maybe the "burden" of being the "face of the NHL" can finally be taken off Crosby's shoulders and others like Ovechkin can help can share in the NHL marquee showcasing.

So let me get this straight, just because Ovechkin is a hockey player and the captain of the team he shouldn't have a life outside of hockey?  Yeah, okay, right.  There isn't a single person on this site that devotes all their time to their job unless they are psychologically stunted.  If you don't care for Ovechkin root for another team.  He has probably been a Cap longer than you've been a hockey fan.  You probably just jumped on board the Caps fan train within the last few years when they became a winning team, in other words, since Ovechkin got here.  His teammates love him, even the ones no longer with the team, and know that nobody wants to win more than him.  Go away dumbie, real Caps fans don't want you here.

it's not his new girlfriend that's causing his troubles. As someone already mentioned, most players have girlfriends or wives and they're fine. She could be actually good influence because she works hard for her career but it will never last because she has to leave him and Ovie will find replacement shortly. The problem is his whole lifestyle meaning that he's been seen partying all over Russia in the summer when most players are either resting or getting ready for the new season. Also, he got lazy because his whole team had to support him and he didn't have to try. And I think that was Bruce's fault because many ppl criticized him for being to much of a friend and less of coach to Ovie. Bruce saw him as a golden boy and gave him too much power. I mean did you see how Ovie snapped and cussed at Bruce during the game?! that's not acceptable for any player. Dale should be hard on Ovie as Russian coaches were on him before and get rid off Semin. He has the talent now he needs the drive!

I got a crazy question here.  Is there any chance Capitals might let Alexander go even though they signed him to that crazy contract?  What if Alexander went to the Penguins or the Wings or even the Canucks (another Pavel Bure?).  Some people commented Semin's time is ticking away.  Would Alexander be better off without Semin on the team?

Sure wish I could go to Alexander's home and light a fire under his arse because it is like he's forgotten how to play hockey.  Just stands around on the ice like he's faffing around.  Urgh!  Wake up Alexander!

If Ovi is distracted by his girlfriend, don't blame her.  He's responsible for his behavior, he should know if he should be paying more attention to playing hockey.  The girlfriend is an easy scapegoat, a convenient excuse for what's wrong with him.  As others have said, other players have wives and girlfriends and it doesn't affect them.  If Ovi can't handle balancing his personal life with his professional life, then his problem is lack of maturity.  Maybe he should grow up and mature and start acting like an adult wuich is easier said than done.

Listen OVI is LAZY  and so is Semin. Russians are prone to resting on their backsides once they have to cash to live the crazy party lifestyle that is common in Moscow and St. Petersberg...He has no drive anymore, look at Nickolay Zherdev and Filatov..unreal skills no work ethic...Kovy, Malkin and Datsyuk are the opposite kind and it shows in their play..Ovi is going to be a has been on a 9 million dollar a year free ride...He has really lost so much respect from everyone and he is a terrible captain and role model for the younger players..Semin will not be back next year which will be a good thing. but no one will touch Ovi's contract.

I just feel bad for him. I don't know what's causing him to have this epic slump so far this season, but his huge personality only really works when he's doing spectacularly. Not sub par. I wouldn't mind if we traded him at this point. Even if we got someone worth a pretty penny, it still wouldn't be as bad as OV, and they'd almost have to be playing better at this point.

Ovie is going down. He's not the golden boy anymore and it's getting even worse...i think he got too big for his own good and now no one talks about him anymore, at least I don't read anything. Everyone is focused on Sidney and his recovery. Btw Sid scored already and the only place Alex scores is with his new gf apparently. Too bad I liked him and I hope he can recover from this and be on top again. I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to change teams or if Caps wanted to trade him because he's getting little too expensive for them.

Yes, Alexander may be living his life, but he is not doing what he is supposed to do when he's being paid 9 million dollars a year which is to score dozens of points and help his team win dozesn of games.  So when we hear he's dating Maria, we think, well geez, no wonder he's doing crappy he's distracted by her, come on now.  Then when Boudreau gets fired and they bring in a new coach Alexander still doesn't step up his game we don't know what else to blame but Alexander's distractions off the ice which all point to Maria, no?

the reason we're negative is because he goes though girlfriends pretty fast. He had another one when the season started and now it's Maria, who btw has to leave and focus on her game. Alex and Maria are both too young to get married and Ovie is known for having parties full of models so I say she doesn't stand a chance!

I don't think the reaction would have been as negative if OV was playing better.  It's hard to be enthusiastic about his new relationship when he's been playing so terrible.  Last season when he started with Lera was a bust, as he had his worst goals and points scored in his career.  Now he's in a new relationship and he's on pace to have an even worse season than last.  Maybe he's happy but a lot of Caps fans aren't so much.  Believe it or not, many fans would rather hear news about him scoring goals than how much fun he's having off the ice.

This will never last because she has her own career and it will be impossible for them to spend time together and then Ovie will go to some club and cheat like he always does... she's pretty girl, not gorgeous, but pretty. At least we know for 100% that he's not hooking up with Valeria:o) I give it 3 months...
Well, the Capitals won against Ottawa.  That has to mean something for them as a team, but Alexander again went pointless.  So even with a new coach, and apparently a new girlfriend, Alexander is still not playing to the level we're used to seeing him play at from 2005-late 2009.  I wonder if he'd be happier back in Russia, maybe in the KHL?

Sorry, but Ovi and Maria sound like a short term fling.  He's too fickle about women and she's too dedicated to her sport to be content with just having her picture taken with him.  There's nothing there of substance, just like there was nothing of substance between Ovi and Lera.  Once Maria hits the tennis circuit, it will be over.

I don't see them as a couple either.  She's on the rebound after breaking up with her bf of 6 years, and he just wants a gf to be photographed with.  There's nothing more to this than that and won't go any further.

If Maria already left, it strongly suggests she was perhaps here for OV's company to have some fun after breaking up with Igor, before she had to get serious about playing tennis again.  Her relationship with Igor probably lasted as long as it did because they had a shared tennis experience with some overlap of travel schedules.  That's not true about tennis and NHL hockey.  The separation will be a difficult test, and based on OV's history, that usually spells the death knell for a relationship to continue.  Remember when Lera started to spend most of her time in NYC and then took off for Miami?  I can't predict the future for OV and Maria.  But the fact that he's considering the possibility of being with an American girl in the future, when for the longest time he insisted on only Russian women, is very interesting, and possibly very revealing.  We'll see.

OV wasn't playing well before Maria came along.  He also played lousy last year when his flavor of the month was Lera.  Getting involved in relationships during hockey season seems to not do his hockey game any good.

Let's be realistic.  OV has been in and out of love so many times, who knows when it finally will be for real?  He can have a personal life and deserves one, but his hockey life should take precedence right now.  He's playing awful, and he has to do something to change all that.
