I understand that Yankees fans still hold a grudge against Carl for being paid $40million to basically sit on the bench for four years. He didn't conspire to get hurt, or fake injuries, or milk minor injuries to get out of playing. The Yankees are notorious for throwing money at free agents and sometimes they don't work out. Carl was the most sought-after free-agent pitcher after the 2004 season, and was pursued by both the Yankees and Red Sox. He would have endured the same scrutiny had he opted for Boston instead of the Bronx. (And I admit, it would have made the Inaugural Game at Target Field even more interesting.) Carl learned his lesson. He doesn't try to rush back from injuries anymore. If he has missed time because of a stint on the DL and he's hurt again, he speaks up instead of trying to hide it. He chalks up his terrible time with the Yankees to bad luck. (Even Yankees GM Brian Cashman agrees - he almost re-signed Carl after the 2010 season.)

I've talked about this with some Yankees fans and they don't hold it against Carl at all. He was hurt, and there really wasn't anything he could do about it. And if he did decide to give the Yankees another shot, the fans I talked to would have supported him.

Ofcourse a blackmailer doesn't care how hated his target is. My point is that by waiting until now the guy may have thought he had a better chance of Carl paying him. He has more to lose and more to protect. His wife, his children and his career. I'm glad he didn't give in and pay. It sux that it all had to come out in the press. Hopefully it blows over soon and Carl and his family can get back to their normal life.
Anonymous (Sophomore) wrote on 2012-03-30T10:45:05

Someone trying to extort money doesn't care about whether or not Yankees fans hated Carl. He's not going to care about Carl having a wife and kids. He cares about one thing and one thing only - money.

In his last year with the Yankees, Carl was only 32 years old - and that's still quite young for a pitcher. Then Carl went to Cleveland and Minnesota and has earned an additional $16 million more.

That's all the extortion guy cares about. Money.

And the guy - has no credibility whatsoever. He sounds downright cuckoo - getting a hold of Carl's sister on FB. He'll forego the juicy book deal and a million plus dollars for an apology and an SUV. He even specifies the interior and exterior colors.

The guy's a real estate agent. Who is going to buy/sell a house with this guy now?

Here are some of his messages found in the press:

"I have serious juicy book offers ... to the point that the only way your brother is getting out of this ... is with a heartfelt apology and a navy range rover with tan leather," Bedard allegedly wrote to DeGennaro, according to police. "If I'm going to drop a 1.2 million dollar book deal I want something.

"That is my best offer an apology and a land rover and I'll kill the project," Bedard wrote referring to the book deal, according to the affidavit. Bedard told The Associated Press in a statement that he wanted an apology because of how Pavano treated him at the end of their relationship. He didn't elaborate.

Bedard, a 36-year-old real estate agent, later rescinded his offer to DeGennaro in another message, police said.

"I'm up to 5 depositions of friends who I trusted with the secret of carl and I's relationship," Bedard wrote, according to the affidavit. "Then I called my attorney ... the book is the best deal."

Vet, maybe that's the point of doing this now...during the worst part of his career he was hated by the fans, the media and even some teammates, reportedly. He was still single would it have really mattered as much. Now the career is better, he has a wife And children. As a wife and parent there isn't much I wouldn't do to protect my family. Whether the accusations are true or not maybe this whacko was counting on that.
Anonymous (Rookie) wrote on 2012-03-30T08:01:52
Reply-to:Why didnt this guy attempt to extort Carl when he was with the Yankees, clearly the lowest point of his career and when he was making more money than he is now? That would have been the opportune time to strike, in my opinion. Why now, when hes doing pretty well, not making Yankee money, married, and has two kids?

Why try to extort from him when he was with the NYY? That does not make much sense. Granted, those were his highest-salary years but the purported extorter waited until this year because:

-Carl is now 36 years old and getting very close to the end of his career.

-In 2013, Carl will be a free agent and who's to say that a team will sign him to a multi-year / big money contract.

So it makes more sense that the so-called high school friend would wait before coming up with this scheme.

Anonymous (Sophomore) wrote on 2012-03-30T07:52:42
Rookie, was Carl the worst free agent signing in recent memory for the Yankees? Sure. But stole their money? No. Injuries happen. Just like its happening to Joba now. He's not stealing money either. I'm sure the contracts are insured. Get over it! It certainly doesnt give someone the right to blackmail him. Oh, but wait, you have such a valid point.....because he was so often injured with the Yankees he must be gay. Lol

Anonymous (Sophomore) wrote on 2012-03-30T05:02:22
Would it do any good for Carl to address the media now? What can if say? He has nothing to apologize for. IF, that's a big if, this guys claims are true, why does Carl have to make a public apology? No matter what he says there will be some people who believe him and continue to support him and others who don't. He doesn't owe anyone an apology or an explanation for something that may or may not have happened over 20 years ago, except maybe his wife. And that should be between them.

Here's Twins beat reporter Rhett Bollinger's article about the case:
Pavano target of extortion plot

Carl hasn't spoken about the matter to either Gardy or Terry Ryan. They might ask him about it in the coming days. But I do agree with the Sophomore who said it isn't likely that Carl will address it publicly yet since the investigation is ongoing.

I think that if there is a kernel of truth to the allegations, Carl should address it publicly to remove any power that the suspect thinks he has. David Letterman used this tactic a few years ago when a former CBS staffer threatened to disclose Dave's affairs. Dave publicly acknowledged the infidelity and issued an apology to his wife and his fans. He was forgiven by the public because he was so up-front about it.
Anonymous (Sophomore) wrote on 2012-03-29T18:49:38
I'm sure he has been advised not to make any comments. Ongoing investigation and all that. For a guy who never seemed to enjoy the spotlight especially in his personal life, this must be a nightmare.
Anonymous (Sophomore) wrote on 2012-03-29T18:45:18
Why would I not support him as a ballplayer? His sexual orientation doesn't have anything to do with his pitching. He's been one of my favorite ballplayers since before his Yankee years.

Anonymous (Sophomore) wrote on 2012-03-29T18:02:51
I should clarify....the scumbag being the guy doing the extorting. The more I think about this the more pi$$ed off I get! Really!? 20 years later you need closure? More likely you think you found a huge payday at someone else's expense. What kind of sick and twisted person does this? Sorry, I think I'm done ranting now.
Anonymous (Rookie) wrote on 2012-03-29T17:51:35
Nicely said, vet. It's pretty sad that chasing down your dreams and achieving them makes you a target for crazy people. I feel so bad for Carl and his family. These are the times you have to remember what really matters. He has a beautiful wife, adorable children and hopefully a great support system of friends and family. Best wishes to them all! And I hope the scumbag gets what he deserves!!
Anonymous (Veteran) wrote on 2012-03-29T11:07:18
This is crazy!
WARRANT: Carl Pavano the target of an extortion bid

This person is claiming he had a relationship with Carl when they were in high school. Now he's threatening to publish his claims in a book unless Carl gives him an apology and a navy blue Range Rover with a tan leather interior. Carl's sister calls the claims "clearly false" and a blatant example of extortion. No charges have been filed but if any are, they're expected to be charges of larceny and harassment.

If I may get on my soapbox for one moment:
It's 2012. And I would like to think that in this day and age, sexual orientation has no bearing on anything whatsoever. Maybe the person trying to extort Carl tried to pursue a relationship with him but was rebuffed several times. He's waited until now to make the money grab because Carl is doing well with his career, has since married, and has two kids. Or, it's possible that Carl was bi-curious in high school but has since found he's heterosexual or bisexual but prefers relationships with women. All that matters to me is that Carl is a good person and a decent ballplayer. (stepping off my soapbox)

No word on if Carl will do TwinsFest. The players appearing usually aren't announced until mid-January. The schedules are posted online the week of TwinsFest (who's appearing where and when - radio interview, kids' Q&A, fan photos, autographs, etc.). As for the cost, everything is a la carte. It was $10 per day to get into TwinsFest 2011. Autographs typically cost $10-$25, and you can get up to 3 or 4 at each signing. Certain player autographs will be pricier, and some will even charge more for signing items like bats or jerseys, or for inscriptions. There may also be restrictions on what a player will sign, usually due to contracts with memorabilia dealers. (e.g. No game-used, no rookie cards, no bats, no HOF inscriptions.) Photos were $3 per player at TwinsFest 2011. With all the autograph and photo lines, you don't pay until you get to the front of the line. And it all goes to charity, so the players aren't pocketing anything.

Carl did TwinsFest in 2010 but not 2011. My guess is he either didn't re-sign in time to be there, or he had already made plans for that weekend.
Anonymous (Rookie) wrote on 2011-10-24T20:07:53
Will Carl be there? So you pay to get in and meet the players get autographs and chat with them?
Anonymous (Veteran) wrote on 2011-10-16T21:15:36
TwinsFest is the annual fan festival held each year at the end of January. TwinsFest 2012 is January 27-29, 2012, at the Metrodome. The Twins usually announce who will be there in advance and post schedules and maps ahead of time so attendees can plan accordingly. (Of course, all player appearances are subject to change.)

Reply-to:Is the players last day of work the last game? Do they start their off season and move to their home states immediately?

Yes. They can usually leave immediately after their last game. A lot of times the team schedules a short meeting for the next day and it's mainly to thank the players, give accolades and help them get their stuff out of the clubhouse. Guys will do autographs for each other and give each other bats, etc. Some of the best sports memorabilia collections are from guys who played in the pros.

A lot of the Sept call ups / younger guys with no GF or wife - you'll see them drive away with their SUV totally packed up. Some guys with wives and little kids drive home. Others use a truck service to carry their car home they ship a lot of their stuff home  then they get on a plane.

In the minors - the last game of the season is usually a one o'clock start and you'll see all the player vehicles packed to the roof. They shower, jump in the car, and home they go.

I have no idea how it works. I would guess players like Carl who live in a different state would have to pack and close up the home they rent for the season. I'm pretty sure he won't be leaving Minnesota the day after the season ends. I'm sure all the families look forward to getting home though, especially after the year they had. Get some R&R and get ready for next year.

Carl is pitching on Monday in New York against the Yankees. Since it was initially an off-day for both teams, the game that he was supposed to pitch back in April is now on that day. After tomorrow's game against the Indians, the Twins will head to New York to play Monday afternoon. Then they'll immediately turn around to play the Mariners at Target Field.

Hopefully nothing serious!

He bare-handed 2 balls. (Get your minds out of the gutter!) The team trainers are evaluating him to see if he may have injured his hand with those catches.

Only 1 of the runs was earned. Carl threw more pitches than normal for such a short outing. I think I heard or read somewhere something about a cut on his finger or hand when he came out in the 6th. Anyone else hear this? Hopefully nothing serious.

Carl got his second straight win tonight. He allowed 3 runs in 5 innings. Thankfully he had the run support this time around.

What bars do the players hang out at in the twin cities?

That's so cute he was smitten with her. Sounds like the morneaus story as well. Maybe I see a career as a bartender in the near future!!! I never have wanted to meet someone in a bar though!

Her full name is Alissa Zandy but she does answer to Alissa Pavano even though they aren't officiallymarried just yet. Like so many player wives, she was working as a bartender when she met Carl. He was smitten with her right away and became a regular patron at the bar/restaurant where she worked. I've only read positive things about her from him, and Alissa seems to get along very well with the other Twins Wives.
